LIMERICK PA – Operators at Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick Generating Station shutdown its Unit 1 reactor Sunday morning (Dec. 18, 2011) during a scheduled maintenance outage, the company said, to have workers replace a valve on the plant’s steam piping system to ensure reliable operations.
Plant personnel were expected to complete the maintenance and begin start-up procedures to return the unit to service. The repairs can only be performed with the plant offline, according to Exelon spokesperson Dana Melia. Such “careful and continuous monitoring of plant equipment is essential to safe and reliable operations at Limerick,” site Vice President Bill Maguire added.
Limerick Unit 2 continued to operate at full power during the Unit 1 shutdown.
