It’s Now Official: Main Street Bridge Closed For 8 Weeks

ROYERSFORD PA – The structurally deficient Main Street bridge over the Schuylkill River, which connects the Chester County borough of Spring City PA to the Montgomery County borough of Royersford PA, closed beginning Monday morning (July 18, 2011) for about eight weeks while crews replace its deteriorated deck, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced.

The bridge has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians. To move between the boroughs, motorists must follow a posted detour along parts of Route 724 in Chester County and U.S. Route 422 in Montgomery County. Local access to businesses and side streets will be available up to the closure points, PennDOT said. Signs will be posted to advise travelers that local businesses in Spring City and Royersford remain accessible during construction, it added.

Drivers can go online to 511pa.com, or call 511 from any phone, to check traffic conditions on major highways before heading out, Jennifer Robinson, an agency safety press officer in its King of Prussia office, noted. PennDOT information can also be found on Twitter.

SEPTA bus routes also are affected by the closing, according to Ryan Jeroski, project manager for the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association.

Commuters traveling SEPTA in either direction btween Spring City to Royersford must transfer at the Limerick Square Shopping Center, Jeroski said. SEPTA Route 139, which leaves from King of Prussia Mall, will travel through Spring City on its existing route, and then go west on Schuylkill Road (Route 724) to cross the Schuylkill River at the Linfield Bridge. Once across the river, the bus will continue on Linfield-Trappe Road until turning onto Lewis Road and stopping at the Limerick Square Shopping Center. It will then get on U.S. Route 422 to complete its route at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets.

SEPTA plans to run a shuttle bus from the Limerick Square Shopping Center to downtown Royersford, he added, so Limerick Square is the designated transfer point between the shuttle service and the detoured Route 139.
