Meeting Wednesday To Review Limerick Nuclear Safety

LIMERICK PA – A federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) assessment of safety performance during 2010 at Exelon Corp.’s Limerick Generating Station (LGS) nuclear power plant will be the subject Wednesday (May 18, 2011) of a public meeting to begin at 6 p.m. in the Limerick (PA) Township municipal building, 646 W. Ridge Pike, Limerick PA.

NRC staff members say they will be open to questions then about both the plant’s performance and the agency’s oversight of the facility.

Assessment reviews “allow us to step back and gauge whether the nuclear power plants we regulate are on the right track” in performance and safety, said NRC Regional Administrator Bill Dean. “We welcome and value” exchanges with area residents to get their comments, he added. The agency issues its review of performance at specific plants twice a year.

Overall, according to the NRC, both nuclear reactors at Limerick operated safely during 2010. By year’s end, it said, it found nothing to indicate the need for additional agency oversight at the units.

Routine inspections at Limerick are conducted by two NRC inspectors assigned to each plant and by inspection specialists from the agency’s office in King of Prussia PA. During 2010, the NRC said it devoted about 5,900 hours to LGS inspections, including four major team inspections.  Among LGS areas being inspected this year, it noted, are dry cask storage of spent fuel, radiological safety, permanent plant modifications and emergency preparedness.
